A web portal of information and monitoring of fires in real time
According to FAO said, the new Global Management System Information Fires (GFIMS for its acronym in English), developed in collaboration with the University of Maryland (USA), the fires detected by satellites of the U.S. space agency NASA.
Advantages of the new portal
The interface has a GFIMS online mapping for displaying pockets of fire in time ‘almost real’, meaning that there is a gap of about 2.5 hours from the time the satellite passes until you can have data. The new system also allows users to receive email alerts on specific areas of interest, allowing them to react quickly.
“The GFIMS was launched at a time when the incidence of large fires tends to increase,” said Pieter van Lierop, FAO Forestry responsible and fire management activities. Until recently, those responsible for the management of natural resources have encountered great difficulties in obtaining timely information from the satellites on the wildfires.
Qualitative change
John Latham, Head of Environmental Management in the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Division, noted that before “the information was very fragmented because it was obtained from various sources, it was not suitable for accurate analysis and the identification of trends. ” “GFIMS is a comprehensive fire information providing essential information to its users while the fire is still active,” he said.
Users can download information on fires in minimum size files and user-friendly formats, among which include text files, ESRI shapefiles, Web Map Services (WMS) files, Google Earth / KML, and a plug-in the NASA World Wind. The system, which offers free membership, can be used by those responsible for fire management and fire, as well as the agencies charged with monitoring of agriculture and natural resources. Initially, GFIMS is presented in three languages, English, French and Spanish.
